Since
the Summer of 2002, I have been serving as Quizmaster at
different bars for their Quizzo games during the week.
Before becoming a Quizmaster, I was a member of the highly
successful "...And The Rest" team which dominated
Garvin's Irishmens Inn from late 2001 to the Summer of 2002.
It was at that time when then-Quizmaster Bobby Hess was
accepted into the Philadelphia Fire Academy, and a
replacement had to be found. With great enthusiasm, I
accepted the position, and I'm still doing this!
My

What
is Quiz Night?
Tom
Asher Presents: Quiz Night is a bar-wide trivia contest
where teams of one to six people (sometimes more) compete
for prizes. Usually, the prizes are gift certificates
for the bar, which makes an excellent reward.
My
game features four rounds of eight questions each, and then
a special round between rounds three and four of ten
questions dealing with a specific topic. I call this
the "Lightning Round"... bad sound effects and
all. All answer sheets and pencils are supplied by the
Quizmaster. For the four rounds of eight questions, I
ask questions about Music, Geography, People, Movies, Odds
and Ends, Television, History, and Sports. The
Lightning Round may be about any of those topics.
Each
team has one "Joker" which they can use to double
their score during one of those eight-question rounds
(except for the first round). For example, if a team
is confident that all eight of their answers are correct,
they may use that Joker to get a possible score of sixteen.
But if they only had six answers correct, they'd get a score
of twelve. But once they use their Joker, they can't
use it again. In addition, they can not use their
Joker during the Lightning Round.
The
final round of the game is called the "Money
Round". This gives teams a chance to earn some
extra cash for getting the highest score on that final
answer sheet, regardless of whether or not they've used
their Joker. A team playing the game does not have to
"buck up" to finish playing the game. Also,
a bystander who might not have participated in the game can
join in the Money Round by paying the entry fee of $5.00.
A tiebreaking question is asked after question eight in the
event of a tie for the Money Round.
At
the end of the game, teams are asked to bring up their
answer sheets for a final time, along with their pencils...
I need them back because it's not like pencils don't grow on
trees. A penalty of fifteen points may be deducted
from a team's score if they fail to bring their pencil back
in a timely manner.
All
decisions are made final by the Quizmaster.
St.
Dominic's CYO / Home and School Association
Since
January 2004, I have run
an annual Quiz Night Fundraiser for the St. Dominic's Grade
School CYO. Families and friends purchase admission
tickets to participate in the game, which features questions
that appeal to children and adults alike. This event
is a huge success each year, and I am honored to
participate, especially since I was a member of St.
Dominic's High School CYO!
Since
November 2004, I have also hosted a Quiz Night at St. Dominic's for
their Home and School Association fundraiser. The HSA
sponsors a night out just for the parents, and it is always
a success.
St.
Timothy's Home and School Association
In
January 2006, I ran a Quiz Night Fundraiser for the St.
Timothy's Home and School Association. Parents and
children were out for a nice night of trivia and
bingo! In February 2006, I ran a game for their Mother-Son social!
